I put this mango-avocado green smoothie recipe together for a very special friend and client who doesn’t particularly enjoy fruit. As with many people these days, she’s forced to follow a fairly strict diet in order to heal symptoms of a leaky gut, so she’s already fairly limited by the foods she can eat. When you considered that she’s not fond of fruit, you have even fewer options for meals.
This smoothie recipe is one that’s not particularly sweet and includes only foods that blend to an extremely smooth consistency. It certainly helps that I have a fancy Blendtec Blender, but I’m guessing you can achieve a decent consistency using something like a Ninja or Magic Bullet. I will however, say that I absolutely love, love, love having a fancy blender and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
One of the important aspects of healing a leaky gut is to avoid eating the same foods over and over again – diversity is your ally. The digestive system is in an extremely fragile state and is prone to developing even more sensitivities if a food is consumed again and again. The foods that are consumed repeatedly are often the foods to which one can develop an issue. For someone who’s already on a restrictive diet, this can be a major problem. The goal is to reach a point at which you’re once again eating a diversity of foods, and limiting your restrictions. This means it’s extremely important to rotate through a variety of foods rather than continuing to eat the same foods over and over. I’m helping my client put together a one-week meal plan that incorporates easy-to-prepare foods that use a variety of ingredients. This smoothie recipe is one of three breakfast options that I’m asking her to try. Hopefully she’ll enjoy the milder flavor of this super delicious smoothie!
- 3 cups frozen mango cubes
- 2 packed cups spinach
- 2 large kale leaves
- 1/2 avocado
- 6 Tbsp hemp hearts
- 2 cups unsweetened almond milk (or liquid of choice)
- Place all ingredients in a high powered blender and blend on high till smooth.
- You can reduce the mango to 2 cups and instead add 1 banana for a sweeter smoothie.

I have recently started making my smoothies with mangos instead of blueberries and they are the Best ever!! I use 1/2 an apple instead of avocado but will try that. And I use maca powder and home made vanilla (!). The other ingredients are the same. I love smoothies, you can hardly go wrong!

So true! As long as you use ingredients that taste good by themselves you can’t really mess it up.
