My 14 month old son is now a runner, climber, gymnast and contortionist – a lot to accomplish is just 14 short months. But seriously, he’s on the go, which means that I’m once again being retrained in my approach to exercise. He’s not always pleased to ride in the stroller while I walk around town and he’s less than thrilled to sit in the backpack for too long. If you read my previous post, Finding Time to Exercise as a New Mom, then you already know that my exercise routine is constantly changing to meet the demands of my life, so this is a bit of an old song, but with a new tune.
Today’s routine involved a short stroller walk to some trails in town. Once we arrived, Owen was promptly unloaded and set free into the wilderness. Okay, so I’m being dramatic (I wouldn’t exactly call Randolph Town Forest a “wilderness”), but you get the point. The little guy was off to pick up sticks, throw rocks, rush down the hill, face plant in leaves and tumble down the trail – all things he absolutely loves. But let’s be honest, he’s SO SLOW and this was “supposed” to be my time to workout! The solution? I got creative.
I did lunges (forwards and backwards, uphill and downhill), pushups, plank, high knee kicks, squats, jumps, burpees, crunches and a few other exercises, some of which I just made up. At one point I was even holding onto a small tree, leaning off a bank and repeatedly pulling myself back to vertical as a great arm workout. Owen loved watching me move around and he got his workout too. Everyone was happy.
Once it gets colder I know I’ll be forced inside more often. So for those months, I’m planning to break out my iPhone and get busy with my Nike Training Club (NTC) app. For those of you who know this app, it’s awesome. It kicks my butt every time. For those of you who aren’t as familiar, check it out if you’re interested in experiencing some serious muscle fatigue (the good kind). But if it’s not for you, see what other apps are out there or get creative with the space, equipment and resources that you already have. Get creative and get moving!
